Fabrics and Colours

We are committed to using North American produced (Canadian where possible), organic fabrics for all of our products.

You can choose from the following fabrics for your diapers:

 100% organic cotton fleece:

This is like sweatshirt fleece-- fuzzy on one side with the smooth knit side facing out. This fabric is very durable and cleans easily.  Though this fabric is soft, we usually recommend pairing it with an inner layer of velour for added luxury.  When hand dyed, this fabric produces colours that are soft and muted.

100% organic cotton velour:

This is an incredibly soft, dreamy fabric.  It starts off as loopy knit terry.  Once the tops of the loops are sheared off and brushed, it is becomes a velvet like fabric.  It is a looser knit than the fleece, stretches side to side a little more and accordingly fits a wider range of size in each diaper than the organic cotton fleece.  Velour fabric takes dye like a dream and produces very intense colours.

 100% organic cotton knit terry

This is like baby bath toweling.  Squishy, soft and absorbent.  Though this fabric is soft, we usually recommend pairing it with an inner layer of velour for added luxury.  Knit terry fabric takes dye very well and produces strong colours.

All diapers are bound in organic cotton jersey.  This fabric is 97% organic cotton and 3% lycra.  We find that a small lycra component helps binding hold up to the wear and tear of diaper washing.

If you prefer to see how the fabrics look and feel in person, el bee baby can send you fabric samples by snail mail.

DYES

We offer our diapers either in un-dyed, natural fabric or hand dyed. We dye all of our fabric ourselves in small batches, using low-impact fibre-reactive dyes.

Things to keep in mind with hand dyed products:

  • Colours will appear quite differently on each type of fabric.  Velours are the most intense while cotton fleece is much more muted
  • Hand dyed products are unique and not always absolutely uniform in colour which is part of their charm.
  • All hand dyed fabrics will show fading over time.
